Crash Glass Mosaic Tutorial

Click here to buy your crash glass now.

Step 1:  Prepare your surface.  Unlike other mosaics, the design happens before you use the glass in crash glass mosaics.  You can cover a painting, a single picture or a whole collage if you want.  I recommend that you seal it with a water proof sealant first.  You can find Mod Podge Clear Acrylic Sealer at Wal-Mart (or anywhere else) for about $5.  It comes in an aerosol can, which isn't great for shipping, so we don't sell it online.  Here is a painted surface that we've sealed and are ready to cover in crash glass:

Step 2:  Prepare your glass.  Our crash glass comes to you sealed between contact paper on both sides for safe shipping.  Use a box cutter to cut the contact paper on both sides if you need to resize it to fit your surface first.  Once the contact paper has been sliced with a box cutter, gently pry the pieces apart while wearing gloves and protective eyewear.  THERE WILL BE SHARP BITS OF GLASS THAT CRUMBLE OUT DURING THIS PROCESS, so be sure to work over newspaper.  Afterwards, gently fold the newspaper up to trap all the shards and discard safely.

Step 3:  Pull the contact paper off of one side of your crash glass (it doesn't matter which side you choose).  Leave the contact paper in place on the other side.  The side that you remove will be the face-down side.

Step 4:  Prepare the surface with the craft glue of your choice.  We're using Weldbond here.

Step 5:  Place the crash glass over the glue, contact paper side up (exposed glass side down on the glue) and press gently.

Step 6:  Allow plenty of time to dry (a day or two), and then gently pull the top layer of contact paper off of the glass.  All the glass should stay in place, but if any glass pops out with the contact paper, simply press it back into place with a little bit of fresh glue.

Step 7:  Enjoy!

How Important is Grout Choice for Your Mosaic?

See the photo below to discover what a difference grout choices can make.  Each of the four tile sections is identical, with the obvious exception of the grout color.  White grout (top) can make tiles seem more spread apart and allow the colors stand alone.  Black grout (bottom) draws everything together and makes bright colors [...]
